Detroit Tigers win a difficult 6-5 victory against Minnesota Twins – MLB Update
A curiously intriguing drama, that involved fan interference, could not deter or help the Detroit Tigers as they beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 at Comerica Park, Detroit on Monday, May 30.
The game was stopped after umpires engaged in resolving the dispute involving whether or not the ball bounced. Nonetheless, the game resulted in Detroit’s victory.
Owing to the considerably long time that the umpires took on deciding the fate of the tie-breaking run, a tense atmosphere prevailed in the ground. However, Detroit’s manager, Jim Leyland tried to give an explanatory version on his team’s behalf when he
said, "It's the umpire's decision where to place the runner. They didn't tell me anything, but I just said 'That run has to score,' and they'd already said right away that run scored."
Minnesota, which has difficulty in winning games lately, had their own version to offer with a tinge of apparent bitterness. Minnesota’s manager Ron Gardenhire said, "I don't care who it hit. The ball went in the stands. When it goes in the stands you know
it's a ground-rule double."
Monday’s game began with the Tigers charging the Twins right from the start. Brennan Boesch was the first to score when Nick Blackburn was tasked with throwing as a starting pitcher. Boesch grounded to first to score the run following which Miguel Cabrera
scored the second run. Brad Penny, in the meanwhile, kept pitching scoreless innings.
Detroit tripled their lead in the third inning with Andy Dirks single. The third inning saw Blackburn giving up two hits. However, Minnesota’s offence had three hits in the fourth inning one of which resulted in Michael Cuddyer’s one run.
Minnesota pounded the Tigers’ defence in the fifth inning when the bull-pen profited from the seemingly slowing velocity of Penny’s pitches. Minnesota earned four runs in the fifth inning, reversing the Tigers’ lead and being in the dominant position with
a 5-3 lead.
Rene Rivera, Jason Kubel, Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer scored one run each to propel the team into the leading position. However, Victor Martinez scored a two-run homer in the sixth inning, as Nick Blackburn allowed the fifth run of the game that levelled
the score.
Alex Avila scored one run in the eighth inning that triggered both debate and anger in the Minnesota camp, to pave the way for a 6-5 victory of Detroit as Jose Valverde pitched the shut-out ninth inning.
