Detroit Tigers working hard to cheer up their fans – MLB News
In some ways it has been a memorable season for the Detroit Tigers, who looked a bit rusty until the end of August. They were three games behind the Chicago White Sox when September began. Jim Leyland and company needed to play out of their skins to replace
the White Sox at the top of American League Central Division standings.
Not only did they secured their second straight AL Central title, the Tigers also made quick work of the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees in the playoffs to reach World Series for the second time under Leyland’s supervision.
Fans lined up on Adams Street early Sunday afternoon but they were not waiting to get into Ford Field; the football Stadium. The gates of Comerica Park were closed and the Tigers were playing a seven innings game with their instructional League team.
A couple of dozens of fans, standing right next to the fence were trying to get a glimpse of the Tigers, who will soon start their best of seven World Series against the San Francisco Giants.
A lot of credit should be given to the pitching rotation that has helped the Tigers come out trouble on numerous occasions this season. Ace Justin Verlander, in particularly, has been leading from the front. Who can forget what he did to the Yankees in Game
3 of American League Championship Series.
"It's been terrific," said Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland, who couldn't think of anywhere else he'd rather be Sunday, either. "Everywhere you go, people are pumped up. They're selling all kinds of Tigers stuff all over town. Where I live out in Royal Oak, everybody's
got Tigers gear on, everybody's in good spirits."
"I did get one interesting comment last night," Leyland said. "I was out and I actually had a guy come up to me and say, 'Great job. And I want to apologize for being mean to you all year long.'"
Striking-out batters at regular intervals and giving up just one run, he played a key role in Tigers’ memorable series sweep against the Yankees. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers can give similar results in World Series to cheer up the people
of Detroit.
