  1. well, i'm from detroit originally, but moved away 23 years ago when i joined the navy. and pretty much... what you hear from everyone is the typical stereotyping... "murder capitol" "gangs" (which there isn't a whole lot of) "drugs" "the city is run down" "rusting away"... stuff like that. most of the time, things like the races (indy, hydro) never make the news... h**l, i live in tampa and never do they give the scores for any detroit team. heck, the news of the mayor is never even on... well, they did have a blip about him going to jail, but that's all. believe you me.... detroit has a serious image problem that won't get solved for a very, very long time... too bad too. they really are trying to fix it up.

  2. I think unless something major happens, Detroit is not in the minds of people outside the state.  I think the local midwest knows about Detroit and knows it can be rough in a lot of ways.  In my opinion, people from the area are too sensitive about it.  Detroit needs to just be what it was and is, but also clean up its act, for sure.  Meaning, it will always be a manufacturing and industrial hub for the world and not Las Vegas, Chicago or New York.

Everyone knows Detroit is the home of the automakers and several other Fortune 500 companies and is just a heavily urban industrial center.  I think a lot of people outside the state do not know what is good in Detroit and that there is a lot of good there.  There are a lot more activities and events than most cities in the US and there is a reason for that.

Stereotypes do not just come out of thin air, but you also didn't see any good parts of Detroit in the movie 8 Mile.

I think people recognize that Detroit is known for sports and cars.  A lot of people probably do not even know where it is.

    Image is perception

  3. im from metro Detroit as well so i guess i shouldn't really answer this question either but some of the things people posted make me laugh. like that the city smells like pollution, thats usually what happens when ever you have a densely populated group of people in a small area. if you think its bad here go to New York or worse L.A. Crime wise if our own government would help out the auto industry crime would drop dramatically, how do i figure u might ask well if more people had jobs they wouldnt be out on the streets trying to make a living

  4. I'm about 15 minutes north, so I don't really count for this question, I guess.

Whenever I'm traveling, and say I'm from metro Detroit, I usually get a little bit of a weird look. Closely followed by questions about Kwame.  (Dumb@ss)...  Just like every other city, Detroit has it's ups and downs.  There are a ton of great things to do, and there are some places you should avoid.

  5. Never been to Detroit, but all I hear about it is bad stuff.  Things like the city is in a state of disrepair, and it has one of the highest crime rates in the nation.  Obviously there are the outlying suburbs, which are probably very nice, but I'm speaking of inside the city limits.  Even people who've never been there know not to go south of 8 Mile Line.

  6. I've lived in LA, Phoenix, Missoula, and Detroit.  This is by far the dumpiest!

  7. I love it, I just spent a portion of my last weekend Downtown and on Belle Island.

I also have compared it to other cities I have visited in the past including Miami. I will tell right now Miami is VERY overrated, and I actually was more comfortable in Detroit. It could be because I spent a good portion of my life there, but even to this day while living outside of Michigan something there keeps bringing me back.

  8. I am a resident and personally I think it is a mess..... Our mayor has a problem keeping it in his pants, which is costing us(taxpayers) millions. Our schools are failing, our streets are run over with drugs, prostitution and crime. If you don't lock your things up in your yard and even if you do sometimes the dope fiends will steal it! Police are non existing in the neighborhoods, and there is alot of racial tension between the illegal immigrants and  the citizens because there seems to be a double standard as far as laws are concered non latinos are harassed by latino officers  if you are lucky  enough and have an officer is available. Border Patrol....lol, have never seen them around here where it is not uncommon to witness a crime or be involved in a car accident with an illegal immigrant, whom NEVER seem to be insured, licensed let alone speak english....... Detroit is in bad shape.... Just another reason to sell my house and move!!!!!!!

  9. The big D is my stomping ground.  I was born and raised in Warren.  Because of re locations within my husbands' company, we have lived all over.   I really miss Detroit.  If the economy were better, we would attempt to relocate.  People that Dis Detroit, minus the mayor are ignorant!!!    Stand up and tell em you're from Detroit!!!!!!  Gotta love you tube and check out all of the old Bill Bonds/Mayor Young commercials.

  10. my biological father is from detroit and still lives there. i have been there many many times and i used to live in traverse city michigan. i think detroit is gross. it smells like pollution. the streets are not good and theres tons of violence. its ghetto and scary. i dont like detroit. lincoln park and other surrounding areas are ok...but detroit...NOPE.

  11. Their are nice places to go and fun things to do BUT it does suck, its hardly pretty, if I didn't have to ever go there I would not, its really sad. Their is so much history here.
