Deutsche Bank Championship culminates with Webb Simpson on top – Golf news
The final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship could not have proven to be more nerve shattering for young, Webb Simpson, who somehow maintained his composure to the penultimate hole to win his second career title on the PGA Tour against the finest players
in the business.
The 26-year-old North Carolina native, kept his birdie putts rolling until the last of the playoff holes to snatch the title form Chez Reavie’s strong grasp.
Simpson, after pulling in a spectacular show on the front nine earlier in the day, closed his round with a six-under, 65, and waited for the miracle to happen. Reavie, who otherwise remained bogey-free the whole day, dropped a shot at the last moment, to
slide back in a Playoff with Simpson, providing the very miracle Simpson had been waiting for all day.
Both players birdied their first Playoff holes on the 18th where Simpson pulled in a 15-foot birdie putt amidst a huge uproar to keep the session rolling. While Reavie failed in his attempt to birdie the second Playoff hole again on the 17th,
there was nothing which could have stopped Simpson to birdie yet another hole for the greatest win so far in his career.
Simpson, who won his second title on tour in a short stretch of three weeks, said, “I thought winning the second time would be easier. You know, to be at No. 1 in the FedExCup with two weeks to go, I couldn't expect anything more. You know, the goal for
us is to be in the top 5 going into Atlanta, and it looks like I'm in a good position to do that, so I'm thrilled.”
Simpson has played splendid golf throughout the season and missed his chance to win the Transitions Cup where he bogeyed the final hole to throw away the title. He lost a Playoff to Bubba Watson at the Zurich Classic. He finally won the first PGA Tour title
at the Wyndham Championship, last month.
This was the first time that the Deutsche Bank Championship has culminated on the Playoffs, although this was a colossal 15th event on the PGA Tour which was decided on Playoffs. The top-70 players will now proceed to the BMW Championship, the
third leg of the FedExCup Playoff Championship, at the breathtaking Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.
