Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open 2012: Rebecca Artis loses ground in the final round
Australian Rebecca Artis, who stood at the top spot at the end of the third round of Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open 2012, looked disappointed when she saw the title slip out of her hands in the final round.
Artis came close to winning the Swiss Open, held at Golf Gerre Losone, but tumbled to the 8th position after she posted a woeful 74 in the concluding round.
Scottish Carly Booth, who fought her way through the first three rounds, knocked the third-round leaders Artis and American Jessica Yadloczky off the top spot in the fourth round, as she shot a 68.
The match was forced to move into a three-way playoff. In addition to Booth, German duo, Anja Monke and Caroline Masson put their skills to test on the extra holes.
The Scottish prodigy walked away with the coveted title after she shot a decisive eagle on the fourth extra hole.
Artis, who was convinced that her supremacy in the first three rounds would help her clinch a victory, got off to a shaky start in the concluding round and marred her hard-earned position.
Blazing sunshine on the last day troubled several players, but Artis’ grim performance reversed the whole scenario, giving her rivals plenty of room to surge ahead.
Analysts said that the Aussie star was simply irresistible from tee to green in the first three rounds, as she kept her rivals at a distance, thanks to calculated strokes.
“I was able to control my nerves early, really. I’ve been doing a lot of work back home with a psychologist, Noel Blundell, and it’s really helped me,” Artis told at the end of the third round.
She went on to say that she will try to maintain her lead in the final round, but will also need to keep a close eye on her nearest rivals.
“I played solid out there again today. The wind was up again like yesterday so it wasn’t playing easy, but I just got it around the golf course. I missed a couple of fairways and followed on with missed greens but managed to make a couple of good up and
downs”.
