Question:

Developing dyslexia?

I'm serious. In my childhood I was very academic, always reading and always encouraged to read. No problems. In high school, I even got top of my school in several of my exams.

I then did a degree in science. No problems.

Now I'm training to be a nurse, and it's like my brain is messed up. When I'm at the hospital and read like a patient ID it might read 1949392 and I really REALLY struggle to see the numbers and write that out. Some words and names are the same.

I took a year out in between Uni. Have I messed up my brain?

  1. Dyslexia is severely delayed development in reading.  People with dyslexia fail to learn to read with ordinary instruction possibly due to a language processing problem like a lack of phonemic awareness.  If you don't read much, you become sluggish with reading tasks but you can't unlearn how to read unless you have a brain tumor or brain damage.

Stress can bring on mental fogs.  How are you when you aren't at work?  If you are struggling with reading numbers, maybe you just need an eye examination.  It is easy to reverse numbers and misread when you are in a hurry, under stress, or don't have optimal conditions for reading like bright light and a decent sized font.
