Devin Britton plonks George Jecminek in the qualifying competition – 2012 Men’s Rimouski Challenger
American contender, Devin Britton, edged past the local rising star, George Jecminek, in straight sets at the Men’s Rimouski Challenger, a hard court tournament which is part of ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event 2012. He joggled
up a 7-5, 7-6(5) score line against the world number 1838 to advance into the final round of the qualifying competition on Sunday.
The 21-year-old fired 16 ferocious aces to tumble over the Canadian contender in one and half hour in their second meeting. They previously battled each other at the Canada F5 last year and after earning this success, Britton maintained his winning streak
against Jecminek.
Britton made a shaky start at the Canadian hard courts and suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-2. However, he made a quick recovery and not only tied the scores at 2-2 but kept remaining serves without facing any hindrance. The American
then cashed in another break chance in the last game to bag the set with a 7-5 win.
He sought seven break opportunities and converted two to his advantage. Britton produced almost an equal first serve share of 52 per cent but brilliantly clicked 15 out of 17 points on it.
Ranked 653rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Britton carried his winning ways in the following set and smoothly plucked entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He also found a break opportunity but squandered it, eventually
dragging the set to a tie-breaker. The American jumped to a 4-1 lead in it before sealing the set with a 7-6(5) success.
The third seed, Austin Krajicek, will join the American in the follow-up round. He got the better of the 16-year-old local star, Brayden Schnur, in straight sets in 68 minutes.
Krajicek warded off all three breakpoints he faced and cashed in the lone break chance to pull out the opener by winning six games to four.
The 21-year-old hammered five aces to keep his entire serves in the second set. He then capitalised on two out of five break opportunities to win the set with a 6-3 score line.
