Devin Logan clinches victory in women’s freeski slopestyle Final at 2011 New Zealand Winter Games
America’s Devin Logan landed on top of the podium for the second time in a row at 2011 New Zealand Winter Games by emerging triumphant in women’s freeski slopestyle Final on Thursday, August 18, at the Snow Park in New Zealand.
Canada’s Kim Lamarre barely missed out on victory to eventually settle for second place, while America’s Dara Howell finished third to round out the podium.
After winning the ski halfpipe contest on Wednesday, the 18-year-old Logan kept the momentum going in Thursday’s slopestyle Finals as she competed against a line-up comprising of talented freeskiers from all around the globe for top honours.
As the final got underway at the Air New Zealand Freeski Slopestyle course in Snow Park, the reigning Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) Champion, Logan, wasted no time in asserting her dominance with an incredible run to earn a winning score
of 79.75 point, collecting her second gold medal at the 2011 Winter Games.
Her massive run consisted of a lip slide to switch-out on the down rail, followed by a front-side to 270 out on the up cannon box, a switch 5 to cork 7 to a straight on 360 out of the bottom lily pad.
Talking to a reporter after the Finals, a thrilled Logan said, “It was great to win again today, as I have my sights set on both the halfpipe and slopestyle disciplines at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.”
The 23-year-old Lamarre put up a commendable fight throughout the Final. She threw an amazing run which consisted of a lip-slide to switch on the down-rail, switch on to switch out of the cannon rail to a switch 5 safety to a big 540 mute to switch 180 in
to 180 out on the bottom lily pad. The sensational run earned her 79.25 points, making her miss out on victory by merely 0.50 points.
The 17-year-old Howell came up with a pretty impressive performance to earn 70.50 points and finished in third place to secure the last remaining spot on the podium.
The local favourite, Rose Battersby, missed out on the podium after finishing with a best-run score of 69.00 points. The 18-year-old sensation is definitely someone to look out for in the future as the latest AFP season unfolds.
