Devin Logan emerges triumphant in women’s ski halfpipe at 2011 New Zealand Winter Games
America’s Devin Logan walked away with top honours from women’s ski halfpipe, the first ski freestyle event of the 2011 New Zealand Winter Games, on Wednesday, August 17, at the Cardrona Ski Resort in New Zealand.
The rest of the podium was swept by the American athletes as well, with Jennifer Hudak finishing as runner-up and Maddie Bowman rounding out the top three.
After getting postponed for the last couple of days due to massive storm and unprecedented snowfall across New Zealand, the latest edition of the New Zealand Winter Games was finally able to commence on Wednesday. Despite the conditions being far from ideal,
with heavy fog causing visibility issues, the female skiers did the best they could to impress the judges.
As the women’s ski halfpipe final kicked off, Logan wasted no time in stealing the show with a run that included a straight air, left 540 grab, right side air, consecutive straight air and a left side 7 tail grab. The incredible effort earned her 80.25 points,
sealing the fate of the contest in her favour.
Logan was delighted with the way the contest turned out, saying, “This was my first competition in a while and it was nice to get a good one under the belt. The weather was a bit rough so rather than putting it all out there I stuck to a safe run. It’s
great to have the opportunity to come down to New Zealand to get some extra training in and I’m stoked with today’s result.”
Hudak managed to clinch second position after scoring 75.50 points of a run that comprised of a left side 540 mute, alley oops mute, consecutive straight air, a left side 7, eventually capping the run with a switch alley oop 360.
Bowman made it to her first podium in the world of freeskiing after scoring 72.50 points to finish in third place. Her run included a left side 540 safety grab, a right side 540, another left side 540, straight air, finishing with a left side 720.
Dara Howell and Anais Caradeux rounded out the top 5 after finishing with 62.00 and 58.75 points respectively.
The 2011 New Zealand Winter Games will continue on Thursday with both men’s and women’s ski slopestyle competition.
