Devon Alexander moving up in welterweight division to take on Paul Malignaggi – Boxing news
American professional boxer Devon Alexander is moving up to the Welterweight division of 147 lbs because he is facing problems with the Light Welterweight division of 140 lbs.
The former WBC and IBF Light Welterweight Champion will be targeting former IBF Junior Welterweight Champion and former WBO, NABO Light Welterweight Champion Malignaggi as his first fight in the Welterweight division.
Kevin Cunningham, the manager of Alexander said, “That’s is our last fight at 140. He’s killing himself so bad to make the weight. After six rounds, his legs aren’t there because he killed himself so bad to make 140. He’s been making 140 since he was 15,
and an amateur. How he’s a 24-year-old man.”
In his last three fights, Devon ‘Alexander the Great’ Alexander, could not perform to convince his manager as he was looking tired and exhausted.
Cunningham said, “Devon didn't look strong in these last few fights by the mid-rounds, referencing Saturday's fight plus Alexander's first career loss in a title unification fight versus Timothy Bradley Jr. in January and his unanimous decision win against
former titlist Andriy Kotelnik last August.”
Cunningham has already mentioned that the 24-year-old, Southpaw stance Alexander will prefer going against the 30-year-old, Orthodox stance Malignaggi as his first choice after moving up at 147 lbs. Cunningham believes that would be a great fight between
the two rivals.
However, for the time being, Alexander might have to look for someone else other than Paul ‘Paulie’ Malignaggi because he is currently recovering from a severe hand injury which he suffered in his last fight.
Cunningham said Alexander's promotional contract with Don King has expired following the fight. He added that they are free to talk to anyone and will be listening to possible offers.
