Devvarman/Huey defeat Muller/Murray 6-2, 6-4
Somdev Devvarman of India and Treat Conrad Huey of Philippines defeated Luxembourger/British team of Gilles Muller and Jamie Murray in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles on Friday.
The Indian/Filipino duo took just an hour to claim the victory.
Devvarman and Huey were first to take lead as they broke Muller and Murray in the opening game of the first set but they were broken back in the very next game to level the score at 1-1. The Indian/Filipino broke again in the third
and fifth game and capitalised on the double break of serve to claim the set 6-2.
In the second set, Devvarman and Huey broke the Luxembourger/British team in the fifth game and held their serve in the next game to take a 4-2 lead. The Indian/Filipino pair served out the set in the tenth game, clinching it 6-4.
Devvarman and Huey were better than their opponents in all departments on the game as they delivered 83 percent of the first serves, claiming 85 percent of the first service points and 75 percent of the second service points in the second set.
The Indian/Filipino combination will face Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram in the semi-finals.
Erlich/Ram beat Baghdatis/Russell 6-1, 7-6(4)
Israelis Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram knocked out Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and Michael Russell of USA in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(4) to book their spot in the semi-finals.
Erlich and Ram bulldozed their opponents in the first set, allowing them to claim only a single game and breaking the Cypriot/American team twice to grab the set 6-1. The Israeli duo captured 85 percent of the points on the first
serves and 83 percent of the points on the second serves in the first set. The Israeli pair was not that impressive with their return of serve as the won just two of the ten first return points. However, they converted two of the five break points they received
on Baghdatis and Russell’s serve in the opening set.
The Israeli team and Baghdatis/Russell held their serve throughout the second set to level the score at 6-6 and took the set to a tie-break. Erlich and Ram claimed one mini-break in the tie-break to seal it 7-4. The Israeli team
converted 67 percent of the first serves and 20 percent of the first returns into points in the second set. Erlich and Ram could not convert any of the three break points they received but the Israelis also saved the two break points they faced in the second
set. The match lasted for an hour and ten minutes.
