Devvarman/Huey, Erlich/Ram sail into the quarterfinals – Farmers Classic 2011
Devvarman/Huey defeat Melo/Soares 6-3, 6-4
Somdev Devvarman of India and Treat Conrad Huey of Philippines upset top seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares of Brazil in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the first round at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The match lasted
for just an hour and one minute.
Devvarman and Huey were first to take lead, breaking the Brazilians in the opening game of the match and holding their serve in the next game to go ahead 2-0. Melo and Soares broke back in the sixth game to square off the score
at 3-3. The Indian/Filipino pair captured three successive games after that as they broke the Brazilian team in the seventh and ninth game, claiming the set 6-3.
Melo and Soares drew the first blood in the second set as they broke the Indian/Filipino duo in the seventh game to go ahead 4-3. However, in a similar fashion to the first set, Devvarman and Huey won three straight games to capture
the set 6-4. The Indian/Filipino team capitalised on both break points they received and saved one of the two break points they faced in the second set.
Devvarman and Huey will take on Gilles Muller of Luxembourg and Jamie Murray of Great Britain in the quarterfinals.
Erlich/Ram beat Dimitrov/Tursunov 7-6(4), 6-2
Fourth seeds Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram of Israel prevailed over Bulgarian/Russian duo of Grigor Dimitrov and Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2 to qualify for the quarterfinals. The match lasted for one hour and twelve
minutes.
Dimitrov/Tursunov and the Israelis held their serve in the first seven games of the opening set, taking the score to 4-3 in favour of the latter. Erlich and Ram broke the Bulgarian/Russian pair in the eighth game to take a 5-3
lead but they failed to serve out the set in the next game and also lost the tenth game to level the score at 5-5. Both teams held their serve in the next two games to force a tie-break. The Israeli pair bagged a mini-break at 4-4 in the tie-break and capitalised
on it to win 7-4.
Erlich and Ram continued to dominate as they broke the Bulgarian/Russian pair in the third game of the second set and consolidated on it go ahead 3-1. The Israeli combination broke Dimitrov and Tursunov again in the seventh game
and served out the set at 5-2.
The 22nd ranked team will face Marcos Baghdatis and Michael Russell in the quarterfinals. The Cypriot/American team defeated Bruno Semenzato and Marcio Torres of Brazil in straight sets 6-0, 7-6(5) in the first round.
