Okay I live in N. Florida and I was wondering what product do I use for Jan., March, May, July, Sept., and Nov for deworming. I've been looking at deworming charts but i'm getting to confused and they tell you to go by your state? Sp can you please help me? Also can I get an off-brand dewormer for the ones you listed?

  1. I like to switch up my wormers throughout the year, so the horse doesn't build up a tolerance to any one class of dewormers.  You can do the Ivermectics, the strongids, the quest type ones, etc.  For the fall, I just like to make sure that it covers BOTS, because they lay their eggs in the late summer, and the horse will l**k them off and swallow them.  For young horses, I want to make sure they cover ASCARIDS because they usually affect horses under 5 yrs of age.  STRONGYLES are the most common internal horse parasite, so I always want the wormers to cover both the large and small variations.

Other than that, you can use any type of wormer (and generic is fine) during any season, just rotate your favorite ones.

  2. I'm also in FL, and we worm every 2 months. We alternate using a generic ivermectin dewormer and using one of the higher end "gold" products like Equimectrin/Zimectrin gold or EquiMax. We have been following this program for 15 years and never had any issues.

  3. I do not have my chart infront of me right now, but a general rule of thumb is to alternate "pyrantel pamoate" and "ivermectin" every other deworming. It keeps the worms n such from getting used to one particular wormer.

  4. you can try this

    January: Safe-Guard (Fenbendazole based)

March: Zimecterin Gold (Invermectin and Praziquantel) or Bimectin

May: Strongid P (double dose for tapeworms) (Pyrantel pamoate)

    July: Athenicide EQ (oxibendazole)

    September: Quest (Moxidectin)

November: Strongid P (double dose for tapes) (Pyrantel Pamoate)

  5. I rotate pyrantel and ivermectin. But the first thing I always do is drop a fecal off at the Vets every 3 months to see if any are needed. And what I am dealing with. It costs me $10 vs paying $10.00 + for each horse. It has saved me several hundreds of dollars and it keeps the resistance down. Deworming a horse really depends on how many you have.
