Dexter: hero or villain?

i just started watching this series, i think it's great.

He is doing good but his methods can be argued with.

He could help the department solve cases but he chooses to go and kill the suspects himself alone.

Most deffinitely a hero, look at the people he's killed, the Ice Truck Killer (went around killer women who didn't hurt anyone) Lila (she tried to kill little kids)a priest who murdered young boys, the Skinner who skinned people to death, Author Mitchell, kills kids, young women, middle age moms and dads, wtf? How is what he's doing wrong. Look at how many people would be dead if he didn't kill the the killers. Granted he killed non killers like a photographer who abused women, killed a guy in self defense who he caught trying to kill someone else, and a guy that wanted to molest his girlfriend's 9-11 year old daughter. HERO!
