Dhcp enabled.....Why automatic private address???

My router is a Linksys WAG200G and i used it for a long time then yesterday i dont seem to get a DHCP ip address i get an automatic private address 169.254.xx.xx i need help please.....my brother can connect to the router through wireless i am using ethernet...also i tried auto setting the dns ip and subnet but did not work i could see my mac address in my routers page but counl not use the internet

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

  1. an automatic private address with a 169 for the first octet implies that it sent out dhcp discover requests to the known wireless signal and got no reply. no reply means your router didnt issue an IP address.


  2. Make sure your cable is plugged in

    Try another cable

    That type of error is due to no connection.

    It' either DHCP or an address. You can't have both. Just make sure that in your internet protocol, that DHCP is checked(obtain IP address automatically)

    If all else fails, open the START menu

    Locate the command prompt in the accessories menu.

    enter the following:  ipconfig /release

    press ENTER

    Now enter, ipconfig /renew

    press ENTER

    type EXIT.

    Now try logging.
