I really think he deserves it. He's been the backbone of the Indian team. He has changed quite a lot as a captain. He's taken much more responsibility and batted extremely well in circumstances. He totally deserves the No 1 position in my view.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I wish him the best. But he lacks certain techniques. He needs to concentrate more on cricket and find a person whom he can listen to.

Secondly, he needs to keep himself from advertisement and endorsements.

Thirdly, keep himself from captaincy, because captaincy brings lots of pressure and kills your skills. Sachin is the best example. Whenever he was a captain of Indian team, he wasn't playing well.

  2. i think he deserved it ,he is the best captain ever

  3. He's there, so he deserves it. I never argue with ICC rankings

  4. i think doni is a no.2 batsman, ramesh powar is best then dhoni he is no.1

  5. Funny that most Indians wish to kick him out last week now he big hero.

  6. Dhoni looks like he's matured so much in the way he can shift gears he can still belt it to the boundary and when hes at the crease blocking it just looks so easy because he won't let anyone get on top of him. He hasn't got the best technique but if he can withstand the corrupt indian coaches selectors etc , and the fact that he's capatining a young side and taking responsibility when he himself is a youngster. So yes i agree he deserves top spot lol!

  7. @OIM,

I completely agree with you!!! MSD has been a fantastic captain and he has matured so well himself that he truly deserves the no.1 spot.

People had started criticizing him that he is not the old Dhoni anymore. He has slowed down and stuff. But I am very happy for him and his change in batting is in fact a very positive one. He is so vital in the middle order and it has always been him who has got the partnership building along by taking the ones, twos and the odd boundary. The progress India has made under him is evident. He had a lot to prove after daring to drop the seniors from the ODI squad, but the results are there for everyone to see. Now no one will say that Dhoni was wrong in dropping the seniors.

India will become a very very strong contender for the WC in 2011, given the way our team is building and the youngsters are getting so much experience!!!

  8. i agree he is the backbone of indias team and probably can help india to some big victories

  9. ICC's way of ratings do not look alright to me. What is required is the ability of the batsman to stand there on the pitch and score runs and dominate the proceedings. How can they determine the strength of bowling attack which inturn is dependent of the strength of batting attack which inturn is dependent of the strength of bowling attack which inturn is...This is a cyclical function. I feel that performance has got to be analysed over the last one year period and take into account the number of runs per innings, number of runs per match as compared to the other batsmen playing in the same series (not match, because a match may get washed off after few overs, all players may not get a chance in a match, there will be huge differences in match to match performance by the same player and we are trying to see the general level of the player as compared to the other players in the same series). Giving credit as to whether the team won the match or not is silly because a team wins or loses based on performances of 22 players, not on one player. If a great player like Lara plays but the team loses, Lara's individual performance will be given low rating which should not be the case as we are analysing the individual performance and not that of the team. Qualifications of 10 test innings for a batsman to get 70% of the rating and 100% rating for 40 test innings, and 30 wickets for 70% rating and 100 wickets for 100% rating are arbitrary and lack rationale. Instead, they could have chosen the minimum number of matches for eligibility. 20 test matches and 40 ODIs may be OK for career assessment; 5 test matches and 10 ODIs for assessment of current form.

While I do agree that Dhoni is one of the very best in ODI batting, I think that he is not the best during the last year. Since he comes towards the end of the innings, he remains not out mostly which increases his Runs per Innings. I feel that more important is the Runs per Match.

Take the case of Salman Butt. In the last one year, he played 21 ODI matches and in 19 innings (21 innings, twice not out), he scored 1,082 runs. Runs per Innings works out to 56.95 and Runs per Match works out to 51.52. During the same time, Dhoni played 35 matches and in 23 innings (31 innings, 8 times not out) he scored 1,315 runs. Runs per Innings works out to 57.17 and Runs per Match works out to 37.57. Can we say that Dhoni's performance is better than that of Salman Butt's ? But then ICC says that Dhoni is at 1st rank with 803 points and Salman Butt is at 21st rank with 666 points.

IMO, Dhoni is about the 6th best during the last one year - after Shivnarine Chanderpaul, SR Tendulkar, Matthew Hayden, Brendan McCullum and Alastair Cook. This hat doesn't fit Dhoni.

  10. Yeah, he's probably the best One Day batsman at the moment. Technically however, I find he is best for walloping the ball, and he doesn't put a high enough price on his wicket. However, that problem is all mental. Once he overcomes that mental block, there is no reason why he should not always be considered among the best, because there is no question he has the athleticism and talent to do so.

  11. No.)! ,..may be  hes a better Captain 4 ODIs  & a good batsmen with minimum technique~
