Dhoni doesn’t deserve a place in the team, says Mohinder Amarnath – Cricket News Update
In response to Indian skipper MS Dhoni’s recent statement, where the captain expressed his desire to continue leading the side despite the latest Test defeat at Eden Gardens against England, the former Indian player and selector, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohinder-Amarnath-Bhardwaj-c77565 questioned
the skipper’s place in the team.
“Who is Dhoni to say that I want to stay there (in the team) and take this challenge (of captaining the side). What has he done? He doesn't deserve a place in the team. There are better keeper-batsmen in the country. They are not getting an opportunity because
he is the captain,” said Amarnath.
After winning the first game convincingly at Ahmedabad, the Men in Blue lost two successive Tests at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 and Kolkata, by 10 and 7 wickets respectively. Facing the humiliation of being down (2-1) in the 4-match Test series against the visitors, Dhoni’s
captaincy came under fire from all corners. Former Indian greats, like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Krishnamachari-Srikkanth-c71750 also questioned Dhoni’s tactics and place in the Test team.
Amarnath, one of the chief architects of 1983’s world cup glory for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, believes that no one in the BCCI has the “guts” to remove Dhoni from the playing XI.
Known for his rocky relationship with the Indian Cricket board during and after his days as a player, the 62-year old said, “I am not against Dhoni. It is not that I do not like him. It is important to look at current performance of players rather than past
performances.”
The Indian skipper, being given an extended run after winning the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 earlier, losing on home turf may just
be the final blow to his career.
Condoning a split captaincy approach, adopted by several other countries, Amarnath suggested http://www.senore.com/Cricket/G-Gambhir-c1447 was his pick for the longest format.
Talking about http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chinnadupargea-Sachin-c50607 Tendulkar's poor show in Test cricket over the past few months, the veteran said, “He has been playing for many years. The time comes for everybody.”
