The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international went on to hit out at the Chelsea squad, following their draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Lampard believes that the current squad that the team possess is just not up to the mark and the fact that they are now five points behind Tottenham, who occupy the fourth spot is proof of this fact.
Following these comments from the Blues midfielder, Di Matteo went on to defend the Chelsea squad and admitted that the team still has the quality to be amongst the very best and that it was just bad luck that left the team where they are.
The Blues interim manager is quoted to have said: "The numbers say that, so there is no point in denying it's been a difficult season"
"But we have quality in this team and many good players. I still think this Chelsea team is a very good team."
Chelsea are currently the only English side that is still competing in any form of European football. With Chelsea now set to take on Benfica in the Champions League, Di Matteo hopes for the team to produce a positive result, which would see them go into
the second leg with all the pressure riding on Benfica’s shoulders.
"It's a very fine line between success and failure, this team has the ability to play a good game tomorrow night," he added.
"Benfica play with great intensity and good pressure, have some excellent players, wouldn't be in the quarter-finals if not."
Following the dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 have really started to pick up the slack. The team is already playing better than they did when Boas was at the club and many believe Di Matteo can help the team end the season on a high.
With the team still competing for the FA Cup and for the Champions League, just about anything can happen over the remainder of the season and it is now a wait to see just how Chelsea manage to end their current campaign.
