Chelsea’s interim manager, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Di Matteo has revealed that he never doubted his team’s ability to go on and beat Benfica in their Champions League match.
The Blues took on the Portuguese side in the Champions League’s quarter final stage, as both the teams looked to make it to the next round of the tournament.
Following a very boring first half, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 went on to score a solitary goal in the second half, which saw them win the game by one goal to nil.
As a result of this win, the Blues are now going to go into the second leg at the Stamford Bridge, with a one goal advantage and with the upper hand.
Di Matteo, when talking about the game is quoted to have said: “It’s terrific. We couldn’t have hoped for a better result”
“I told you before the game we would need to score and we went close on a number of occasions, and then to keep a clean sheet as well – another one – I think we looked defensively very, very good again.”
He then went on to admit that his side looked brilliant defensively and that they never seemed to be in any real danger during the game, considering how well they controlled the match.
“Defensively, we never looked in any danger. They obviously had some set-plays where they were dangerous because they are a physical, big side but, apart from that, I think Petr [Cech] had a few saves to make but they were mostly long-range.”
However, in order to defend his decision to field some rather peculiar players, Di Matteo is quoted to have said: “The fact that we’re playing all of these teams, it’s important that we try to select a team that has the energy to be able to be competitive.”
Considering how the manager seems to be getting the best possible results for his team, hardly anyone is going to argue over his ability to pick the right team.
Nonetheless, should he keep producing some decent results with the team, he could easily go on and be promoted to being the permanent manager at the club.
