Dia Evtimova annihilates Melanie Klaffner to breeze into 2nd round – NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2011
Bulgarian qualifier Dia Evtimova knocked off local wild card entrant, Melanie Klaffner with a breadstick and a bagel at NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2011, a clay court tournament held in Bad Gastein, Austria. She registered a brilliant
6-1, 6-0 score line against the 21-year-old Austrian to advance into the second round on Tuesday.
Evtimova showed nerves of steel and soul of platinum to destroy the local tennis star completely in just sixty-two minutes on their fifth meeting. Ranked 239th in the Sony Ericson WTA Premier rankings, the Bulgarian
downed Klaffner, ranked twenty-eight places below her, with a bagel at Ystad last month. She continued her winning ways in this WTA event and extended her lead in the head-to-head series by 4-1 against the Austrian.
24-year-old Bulgarian thundered into the opening set as she earned the desiderated break in the second game to extend the lead by 2-0. Though she lost her serve in the very next game but went into savage mode to wipe out next four
games in a row. Evtimova produced an amazing first serve share of 76 percent as opposed to youngster’s 48 percent and earned a plausible 63 percent win on it.
Evtimova kept her winning run in the second set as she unleashed flurry of groundstrokes to reel off all six games in a row to earn a bagel in under half hour. The Bulgarian rising star faced zero breakpoint and capitalised on
three out of four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
The Bulgarian had a poor run of form at the start of the season but she raised her level of game in late May and continued her form to make semi-final berths at Maribor and Istanbul ITF events. She then clinched the title at Ystad
ITF before showing herself in this WTA Premier event.
On her way to the main draw, she triumphed over qualifying third seed, German Laura Siegemund in the first round, Slovak Michaela Pochabova in the second and qualifying fifth seed, Hungarian Reka-Luca Jani in the final qualifying
round.
Up next for her is another local wild card entrant, Nikola Hofmanova who stunned fourth seeded Czech Iveta Benesova with a retirement victory to reach this spot.
