  1. I was diagnosed at 26, Metformin did the same to me, taking my blood sugar on a roller coaster ride, due to a new insurance carrier, I had to change my doctor, who changed my meds to include Actos instead of Metformin, it was a night & day difference. A1C scores of 5.5 % to 6% & I'm not waking up every other hour to pee either!

It might be worth your time to ask your healthcare professional about Actos or Avandia, if i'm not mistaken they are about the same.

  2. Go to an endocrinologist and get started  with a great health care team.

Sounds like you have type 1.

    Don't wait.

  3. I can tell you from experience that Metformin can take up to 6 weeks to start working. Your doctor may need to add an additional medication to assist in getting your numbers down.

My husband was diagnosed May 2. He is a thin and trim 145lbs. So you DO NOT have to be overweight to have type 2!!!!

Make sure you are eating a low carb diet and exercising. Exercise is one of the best things you can do to help get those numbers down! Visit www.diabetes.org for more help.

  4. Here are a pair of articles for you:

  5. You can develop Type II diabetes at any age.  It sounds like you are not getting the right amounts of medicine.  I would suggest that you see an Endocrinologist to get your blood sugars under control.  They will probably also suggest seeing a nutritionist for your diet.

Diabetes is very manageable if you get the right care.

    Good luck.

  6. go to www.webmd.com..put it in the search and rea up on it..

  7. I was diagnosed with type 1 in Jan 2008 aged 46. I was then correctly diagnosed with type 1 in june 2008. I think doctors assume that because you are older then it must be type 2. I lost loads of weight and muscle (i wasn't very over weight). I went from 14stone 4lb to 11 stone (i'm about 6ft). I'm on insulin 4 time a day and i'm gaining weight but my sugar levels are still to high. It sounds to me that you are suffering in the same way that I did.  I'd go back to your doctor and make a bit of a fuss.

  8. I was on the same type of med. that your on. I started exercising watching my eating because I was trying to cheat by eating sweets that I shouldn't have.. Just go to your dr. and tell them what is going on so they can help you feel better,,,, Good Luck.. I know what your going through......

  9. they had me on metformin combined with a few other pills for 9 months before they decided i needed to start insulin, by then i had lost every inch of fat tissue on my body and most of my muscle tissue and i was having severe heart palpitations, in retrospect my doctor wasnt very good at the whole diabetes thing and could of killed me because of it, you probably need to adjust your diet to smaller more frequent meals with enuf protein to stabilize your sugars but you also may need some insulin, i was 24 when i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes which they thought was type 2 for a long time, you really need to track your sugars closely along with what you eat when for like week and call your doctor or endocrinologist with the results so they can hopefully adjust your meds accordingly

  10. It is possible that you actually have Type 1 diabetes, not Type 2. How did your doctor determine it was Type 2? When did you start the metformin? Metformin takes awhile to build up in the blood before it actually starts working. Thirst, frequent urination and weight loss are classic symptoms of Type 1. Unfortunately for most Type 2's weight loss is NOT a symptom.

  11. There are a few questions most of us have for you:  how long have you been taking the metaformin and how heavy are you?  Also, what about your diet, are you following a low-carb routine?  If you've just started taking the metaformin, it might take a while for it to be effective.  If you're a newly diagnosed diabetic then you're probably experimenting with your diet and you might not be getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need.

Are you taking a multi-vitamin as insurance?

You might want to check in with your doctor and ask these questions.  I'd also suggest you ask your doctor about working with a nutritionist to help you get a good food plan.  It takes a while to sort out all the meds, new food plans and lifestyle changes that following a diabetic diagnosis.  Hang in there and take a deep breath while taking one day at a time.
