  1. You can drink, just watch the sugar in the drinks, dont smoke though, it can raise your Blood Sugar instantly and it hurts your vision in great and many forms, drinking is fine for diabetics, dont smoke though

  2. The golden rule of alcohol and diabetes is that alcohol LOWERS blood sugars.

Spirits such as brandy, whiskey, vodka, gin etc... when not mixed with anything (regular coke, 7up) will have the lowering effect sooner than high carb alcoholic drinks such as beer.

After drinking a few bottles of beer your sugars will be quite high sometimes peaking into the high 20s.  It can be dangerous to take insulin to lower them however, as a hypo can occur due to the alcohol content anywhere during the following 24 hours.  Diabetics are generally advised to always eat something like bread or take out after drinking alcohol.

I recently attended a course and had a seminar on alcohol.  We were told that the majority of hypos which result in death were alcohol related hypos.

So you must be very careful the 24 hours after.

Other than that I've always enjoyed drinks!  As with everything else, every diabetic is different, but always be aware that the following day, particularly in the morning, there is a nearly100% chance of a hypo. Nearly.

As for smoking.  Bad for everyone not just diabetics obviously.  The reason diabetics are cautioned more so is because it can be bad for blood vessels, for instance at the back of your eyes.  It can damage them and along with prolonged high sugars can lead to blindness quicker.  Sorry I don't know to much specifically about it, but that's just one of the many complications it can make greater.

  3. I do not know about tobacco, but alcohol (also causes heart, liver and kidney problems)is very bad for a person having diabetes, and tobacco is bad for anyone (hope you already know it causes cancer). Live Wisely Stay Healthy.

  4. Alcohol is okay in moderation.  Actually just about everything is okay in moderation, but 'moderation' means something different for diabetics than for the rest of us.  I can have a beer or a glass of wine and it has no effect on me at all.

In fact many diabetics drink a glass of red wine at bedtime, which lowers their blood sugar in the morning by decreasing 'the dawn effect'.  The liver senses low blood sugar during the night and makes sugar for the blood. The idea is that the alcohol keeps the liver busy all night so your blood sugar is lower in the morning.  I have tried it and it doesn't work for me, but then I already take drugs to keep my liver from making a lot of sugar.

Of course you want to stay away from 'sweet' drinks that have a lot of sugar in them.  And you don't want to get roaring drunk.  Moderation.

As for tobacco, that's bad for anyone.  There are good medical reasons why a diabetic shouldn't smoke.  I forget what they are, but then I don't smoke so I didn't have to remember the reasons not to.

  5. all alcoholic drinks are prohibited for diabetics. if taken, type 2 shall be converted into type-1 diabetes. type-1 shall, have to take insulin injection daily.

  6. Yes a diabetic can drink alcohol, but you must be very careful. Alcohol can dramatically lower blood sugar levels, and depending on your medications, extremely low! If you plan on enjoying a cocktail, be sure to pair it up with proteins to help you avoid dangers lows. Be safe while drinking and you will be fine.

  7. Just don't go having any sugary syrupy mixers in your drinks. I like an occasional glass of wine or a beer. I just make sure I have them with food and only one drink.

I do smoke and haven't found any good reasons for quitting other than not being able to breathe, but the damage is already done, why quit now?

Tobacco use DOES NOT cause cancer. It may trigger the cancer cells you have to activate, but it in and of itself does not cause cancer. NO, my breathing problems stem from asthma and lifestyle and the fact that I had a lot of pneumonia as a child.

They have not proven either that alcoholic beverages cause heart diseases, but can and do mess with the liver a lot.

It is much better I think, if you smoke, quit!!! Don't drink very much alcoholic beverages if any.
