Diabetics in Canada?

Hi, my wife is a type 1 diabetic and is using an insulin pump, we presently live in the U.K. so have the benefit of the NHS. We are going to apply to move to Canada, preferably Saskatchewan or Alberta, what I would like to know is do we need to purchase medical insurance or will we need to pay a large one off fee? My wife needs a lot of insulin and spare parts for her insulin pump. I thank all for their answers in advance, and for anyone giving silly answers for points go to the teenage sites for that.

  1. I don't have an exact answer for you, but I'd suggest you look into

    http://www.health.gov.sk.ca/drug-plan-be...

and/or Canadian health insurance plans in Canada, like Blue Cross or Manulife.

Oh, one thing right on our phonebook (in Saskatoon, SK) is HealthLine, and their website is www.healthlineonline.ca

    (Note: no silly answer here!!)

  2. Im currently in Saskatchewan, and have an additional coverage thru myhusband, SK Blue Cross, but I have type 2 diabetes, under that plan, I can claim for my diabetes tools, strips and lancets thru Blue Cross Extended Health Benefit which is only 50% of the amount, but since my husband have a $500 a year health spending, I usually claim the remaining 50% on it.  So it is really depends on the additional coverage you will be getting and the company getting.  But with the provincial health care, I read that it is only insulin pump for children which are free, but the medical check up and laboratory that was done to me was free.

    hope that helps. Good Luck!
