Diablo 3 continues to sell despite flaws and controversy – Video Games Update
Blizzard has announced today that Diablo 3 has become one of the fastest selling PC games to date with over 10 million copies shipped in just three months.
The ‘10 million’ figure might be overstated a bit as it was also reported that 1.2 million copies were given away for free to World of Warcraft players with an annual subscription but it is still an impressive feat as the game was crowded by controversy
since launch.
Blizzard CEO, Mike Morhaime, has stated that Diablo 3 faced server related issues at launch because of the “unprecedented influx of players” but the team worked non-stop and ironed out all the bugs weeks after launch.
Mike states that Blizzard is not satisfied with the impressive sales figures and is probably worried about the dropping player count of the game. Currently gamers are not satisfied with the Real Money Auction House (RMAH) endgame, as the developer wants
players to keep playing Diablo 3 for “a long time.”
"We've already made a number fixes and updates including the activation of the Auction House, which provides a convenient way for players to trade items with each other. The Diablo team has also been working on improvements to end-game rewards and having
a player-versus-player mode, which we hope will enhance the value and longevity of the game," stated Mike in a letter to Diablo 3 players.
This means that Blizzard has realised its mistake and is hard at work developing new content for the game which will keep players occupied once they clear the story mode and are bored with grinding for the RMAH.
The question is will Blizzard manage to add more content to Diablo 3 before the upcoming holiday season when lots of blockbuster games are coming out. The long awaited expansion for Blizzard’s own World of Warcraft, titled Mists of Pandaria, is also coming
out this September and it is likely that the MMO might attract the remainder of Diablo 3’s user base.
Can Blizzard manage to have its cake and eat it too by making sure that both the titles thrive this holiday season? The developer is hoping for that to be the case this fall.
