Blizzard are in a devilishly good mood after the third instalment of their cult-classic series has broken the record by selling 3.5-million units on its first day before going on to record a total figure of over 6-million units sold in its first week.
Diablo 2 was released at the start of the millennium and gamers had to wait over a decade to get their hands on the three-quel of the iconic series. However, it seemed that all those years spent in self-exile did not make its hard-core fan base any less passionate about the series as they turned out in their millions to finally play the long overdue title.
In fact, the game sold over three-and-a-half-million units within 24 hours of its release. The load of all those gamers rushing to play the game caused the Blizzard servers to crash. At the same time Error 307 made the game virtually unplayable, although that did not stop over the next six days as the total sales figure rose to over 6.3-million units sold.
If one wants a very rough idea of how much money the game made in its first week, well the figure comes to around $378,000,000!
Mike Morhaime, the Blizzard CEO, took a moment to thank the fans for their response and how they took to the game. He said, “We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo 3 and jump in the moment it went live.”
Before going on to apologise for the post-launch issues that gamers were facing. He said, "We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so.”
“I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo 3 players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their on-going support."
Diablo 3 has proven to be a major hit with PC gamers and what’s more is that the sales figures have not incorporated the 1.2-million units given to players who had previously signed up for the World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion.
