That's a simple schematic. The coil consists of three connections plus the ground clamp that bolts it to the engine. The middle large wire is the distributor coil wire, it transmits the charge to the appropriate spark plug via the distributor. The two smaller wires, one goes to the ignition switch and the other goes to the distributor capacitor and points connection that switches the spark on and off to the spark plug that is firing at a given time. The distributor cam rotates to give the switching effect on the points as it rotates. I could visually show you much better than trying to explain it.
