Diamond Harry ready for Gold Cup
The Nick Williams-trained talented gelding, Diamond Harry, is ready to run in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on March 16.
During the black gelding’s last race on January 28 at Cheltenham, his jockey, Noel Fehily, reported some breathing problem. After examination, it was found that the veteran runner needed a surgery.
Initially, it was being perceived that, Diamond Harry, would not be able to recover soon, and that he might miss the high-profile Gold Cup.
However, the enthusiastic gelding overcame his fitness problem very soon. Now, he seems to be ready for the big event.
Diamond Harry’s owner, Paul Duffy, claims that his horse will surely perform well in the upcoming event. He wants to send him straight to the Gold Cup.
While speaking to the media yesterday, Duffy said, “The operation went OK and he's recovered well. It was just a minor wind op on his soft palette. He's back doing a bit of walking. I know he's had his preparation interrupted but he wouldn't have been doing
that much at that stage.”
He added, “Obviously we won't know for sure if it's worked but we're going to have a go at the Gold Cup."
Diamond has been at the peak of his momentum since the very beginning of his career. Foaled in May 2003, he made his debut in March 2007.
The dashing gelding won first six races of his career in a row, establishing himself as a favourite runner in the eyes of the bookmakers. He went on to perform, and win consistently in further events as well.
As a whole, the nine-year-old has won 10 out of his total 15 races so far. His last victory came in November, 2010.
It shows that the month of March is lucky for Diamond Harry. The racing experts opine that he will thrive in the Gold Cup as well.
The Grade 1 event will have 34 runners. Diamond Harry is ranked 8th in the weights with Albertas Run at the top. The race will begin at 3:20 on Friday provided the weather permits.
