Diamond Harry’s future in horseracing uncertain
Diamond Harry’s participation in future events has become doubtful, following reports that he was suffering from breathing problems during the races he took part in this year.
Paul Duffy, co-owner of the horse, revealed, “We believe he has a breathing problem. Noel Fehily (jockey) reported he was gasping for air so we are having it investigated - I spoke to Noel yesterday and he thought the horse did very well in light of
the problem.”
Diamond Harry was the joint favourite for the Argento Chase with a starting price of 100 to 30, but he was unable to make an impression. He only managed to finish in fifth, which was unsatisfying for his trainer, Nick Williams.
The start of the race was unimpressive for Diamond Harry, as he was right at the tail of the order. He did make up a few positions, but that was not enough for him to end up in the top three.
The nine-year-old gelding has earned three victories in chase events out of eight attempts. He was likely to fight for victory in the Gold Cup, which took place at Cheltenham on Friday, March 16, 2012. The bookmakers had given him a general price of
20 to 1 for the event.
However, the seasoned stallion was unable to make an impression in the mega event and he was eventually pulled up by his rider. He failed to start off well and was way back during the race. There was no chance for him to bounce back from then onwards,
thus it was a clever idea for him not to complete the entire distance.
Diamond Harry had a complete check up before entering the Gold Cup, as his team was concerned over his health. Despite that, things have not been working out well for him, as he had to pull out during his final outing of the season at Aintree.
Until 2010, Sir Harry Lewis’ son was quite a competitive runner and he never made life easy for his opponents. He was definitely one of the best in the business back then, but things have not worked out in his favour since the past couple of seasons.
It seems that his career would come to a sad end pretty soon because of his fitness issues.
