Diamonds can be made from other forms of carbon, but diamonds are still carbon.  

If you have a nuclear accelerator, you can turn platinum into a gold isotope, one atom at a time.  There are just two problems with this:

1) Platinum is rarer and more expensive than gold.

2) The isotope is unstable and comes apart in a few days.
