Diana Luna snatches second-round lead in France
Italian Diana Luna displayed an impressive performance in the second round of Lacoste Ladies Open De France 2012, as she fired a 64 to snatch the lead from first-round leader Stacey Keating of Australia.
Starting her second round in an intense confrontation that saw Keating shoot a 62 on the opening day at Chantaco Golf Club, Aquitaine, France, Luna could not have put it more aptly as she diluted all the pressure and managed to post a massive score.
The second round on Friday saw the Italian star capitalise on the favourable weather conditions as calm winds swept through the course all day, helping contenders in manoeuvring the ball on the fairways and greens.
Luna stared her round by parring the first four holes and rattled off two consecutive birdies on the difficult par-3 5 and par-4 6th hole in the hope of putting some pressure on her nearest rivals.
On the 9th hole, the second-round leader displayed a calculated game on the putting green as she chipped in for her third birdie on the front nine.
On the back nine, the LET (Ladies European Tour) star kept the momentum going and carded four birdies and one bogey.
Sharing her thoughts at the end of the round, Luna said she did not lose confidence till the last moments of the round. She regretting missing plenty of chances to shoot birdies, saying some holes proved tricky.
“I think I’ve been playing very good, the short clubs to the pin, so I had many, many birdie chances. I have been playing well with my 8, 9-irons, wedges, so that was the strongest part. I think was pretty windy all the way around but because we are sheltered by the trees, you don’t really feel it,” Luna said.
Commentators said that grabbing the second-round lead has given Luna heaps of confidence and she can pose a serious challenge to hot favourites in the next two rounds.
Commentators also pointed out that Luna’s flawless putting is another plus for her. Not only has she done well in some of the recent tournaments, but she is also capable of doing well in the coming LET tournaments.
Having won five LET tournaments in her decade-long professional career, Luna has crafted a stunning profile that speaks of her success and commitment to the sport.
