Diana Luna wins the UniCredit Ladies German Open
Diana Luna posted a final-round 65 to win the UniCredit Ladies German Open by seven shots. The Italian player claimed her fourth Ladies European Tour title at the Audi sponsored tournament at Golfpark Gut Hausern in Munich.
Originally from Rome, Luna made 20 birdies and no bogeys in the entire tournament. Winning with a great margin over Finland’s Minea Blomqvist, the 28-year-old was surely proud of herself.
The way Luna played in the tournament was remarkable. In the final weather-interrupted day, the player brought sparks of her own. She started off on the front nine and got on with her game, making back to back birdies on the third and fourth hole. Birdying
the seventh hole, Luna made the turn for three under par.
On the back nine, the player had to leave the golf course due to lightening threat, but not before making birdies on the eleventh and thirteenth hole. After the break, Luna again didn’t hesitate to start off with a birdie on the fourteenth. With just two
more holes to go, Luna was six shots ahead of Blomqvist. Where Luna birdied the seventeenth, Blomqvist bogeyed the hole giving the Italian a decent eight shot lead. Even though Blomqvist birdied the last, all she could do was narrow down Luna’s victory margin
by one shot.
As soon as Luna won, local player Martina Eberl and the winner’s fellow Italian players rushed on the course to shower Luna in champagne. Winning the SAS Masters in Norway two years ago, Luna couldn’t contain her happiness.
“I am so happy, I mean, I have been playing great all week. I’m happy that I won with a good score and I’m very, very confident and feeling great. It was special, something that hasn’t happened since 2009. It’s been two years now and it’s so nice to be back
there,” said Luna.
The runner up, Blomqvist was also very happy, which was visible by her tears of joy. This was the first cut she made since the 2010 Finnair Masters in August.
The next stop on the Ladies European Tour is the Ladies Slovak Open scheduled to start on May 26th in Slovakia.
