my 16 year old son is a bedwetter. We have been to the doctor and found out the problem and we can deal with it at home, however he sleeps in the car on long trips and just last month he had an accident during the trip. I am thinking about putting him in diapers for the trip because cleaning car seats arnt as easy as beds. any thoughts? I have told him about it and he seems reluctant, but surely its better than wet pants.

  1. don't start screaming at me when i ask this question.  is your son mentally challenged??  my mom went through the same time with my younger brother but, he was 8 when he was finally potty trained.  i would go ahead put him in the diaper on long trips.  have him go before you leave and then make sure depending on the trip ask him half way through your trip if he has 2 go again.  probably making more stops would help.  what is the problem???  does he have a small bladder??

  2. 16 yr old? diapers?

  3. Explain to your son that he can buy the ones that aren't obvious under his clothes and he won't have to change whenever you all stop at a restsop after sleeping. Many children suffer this, so it's normal. Try preventing him from drinking anything during the trip unless you all are stopped a while for it to come out or at least so he can alleviate his bladder. If he won't wear a depend (diaper), then put seat coverings on the seats so he doesn't mess it up. Hope this helps.

  4. perhaps instead of calling it a "diaper" you can call it something like a security brief..  "diaper" sounds so babyish.

Explain to him that its less embarrasing than obviously wet pants.  No one else has to know about it..  its just added security, and explain that its only needed for long trips when he tends to fall asleep.

  5. There is adult incontinence underwear that is a lot easier to use than the old kind with the tapes.

You'd be surprised at the number of ladies and gentlemen who wear them.

Try them.  There at least three major brands.

  6. Sooo fake

If he really did have problems, the doctor would take care of it so it would stop.

  7. That's why they make Depends -- for adults (or, in this case, almost-adults) with problems.   Depends are pretty discreet, they shouldn't be a problem.

You might also want to get something called a "Neat Sheet" -- it's a very thin waterproof "blanket" that you can spread on the carseat.  We used one when the kids were small, not because of wetting, but because it protected the seats against spilled drinks, crumbs, etc. on long trips.  They can be washed, but they are cheap enough to just throw away, if washing isn't convenient, and they aren't hot like plastic covers.

  8. if i was a 16 year old, i wouldn't want to wear a diaper either....why don't you get a case of the disposable underpads (chux) and he can sit on them when he's sleeping in the car.

  9. Yes I would put a diaper on him. I'm sorry that your son and husband have this problem. You can usually get really discreet adult diapers now. It's better than cleaning pee out of the car.

Good Luck and hopefully he outgrows it soon.! :)

  10. im guessing your son doesnt like the idea of wearing diapers at 16 so tell him its the only solution if he doesnt want to be seen with peed-in-pants, is to wear them. buy the largest diapers you can find, but let him wear his boxers, too. the first couple trys take it off for him and see if its working. but remember to keep as much of a secret as you can!!

  11. He may have been born with a smaller bladder!  He can't hold his urine.  Try telling your doctor that.  Other than that, give the guy a break.  People wet their pants from time to time!

  12. I would just wake him up and have him pee every hour. I'm sure that it would be embarassing and uncomfortable for him to have to sit in a wet diaper. If your husband has the same problem then is there really the option of outgrowing it? You might want to go see a different doctor for a second opinion. Good Luck!

  13. That might work, but I can see how your son is reluctant. It's very embarrassing, but something has to be done. I know I used to be a bed wetter when i was younger so I just got into the habit of not drinking anything before I went to bed, or went anywhere, and then going to the bathroom before and after I slept.  This is going to sound cruel but you have to teach your son to get out of this habit. Don't give him anything to drink before you leave or while you're in the car. He can have a few sips of water or something, but not too much. I would get him into going to the bathroom before he leaves (for the trip) and after you guys arrive. You could bring diapers if you feel you need to, but I don't think your son would find that very comfortable.

I totally understand how your son feels and you just have to get him into the habit of going to the bathroom, a lot sometimes, so he can get used to it.

Good luck and have a nice trip! :)

  14. well they have lots of diapers that are more like underwear now-a-days.

so how come you can't deal with it when you're in the car? they have medicine and maybe just stopping every hour would help.

  15. They have adult diapers just for that reason...no one has to know.  I would think he'd be alot more comfortable with that on rather than wetting his pants.

  16. my 16 year old cousin had the same problem... when we went on trips we would have to stop every hour on the hour for him to pee... sometimes we would have to make him pee.. so i would just stop every hour. b/c those diapers would irritate his skin down there
