Dibella Entertainment likes prospect of Manny Pacquiao – Andre Berto
Of course Andre Berto’s camp likes the prospect of a future Manny Pacquiao bout.
Following Pacquiao’s demolition of Antonio Margarito, a number of names were drawn up as possible opponents for “Pacman” in the future. Aside from Floyd Mayweather Jr. still being the top dog, “Sugar” Shane Mosley and WBC welterweight king Berto have been
tossed around.
Berto, in particular, is scheduled to take on Freddy Hernandez at the MGM Grand November 27. Should he be able to topple Hernandez, which is expected, Berto advisor Joe Quiambao believes he’ll be ready for Pacquiao.
Quiambao, who works under Lou Dibella and his Dibella Entertainment promotional company, told boxingscene.com that Berto – Pacquiao would be a “great fight.” He continued: “Berto has speed, power and a lot of amateur experience. It’s not like Pacquiao would
be fighting a guy that got beat up.”
“Andre is still approaching his prime. You already know about Pacquiao. He has the complete package: speed, power, and he’s a southpaw, but Berto has done decent against southpaws. I would love for him to take his skills to a whole new level.”
Though a Berto fight for Pacquiao remains a viable possibility due to the two fighters being comfortable at welterweight, many feel Berto does not deserve a fight of this magnitude. While he is the current WBC champion, many feel he has not justified himself
against world-class competition, and that he has been ‘inflated’ as a fighter by the likes of HBO.
In his last bout, Berto stopped Carlos Quintana, arguably the only name fighter in his professional career.
A round of negotiations between Berto and Mosley crumbled in August when Berto, to the surprise of many, demanded a 50-50 split purse with Mosley, long considered one of the legends of the sport. Many felt that Berto was being unreasonable in terms of financial
expectations.
