The PSV Eindhoven boss was not completely satisfied with his side’s 3-1 win over EHC in a Dutch cup encounter, but admitted that progressing through to the next phase of the competition matters the most.
In the latest round of KNVB beker Cup football, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 Eindhoven cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory over EHC Hoensbroek at Philips Stadion on Wednesday, October 31.
d**k Advocaat, the Boeren head coach, was far from pleased with his side’s performance in front of their home crowd, and revealed that his troops should have put the match to bed earlier.
Memphis Depay’s strike gifted the hosts a deserving lead within 20 minutes of play, but the Eindhoven giants failed to double their advantage until the 74th minute, when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Georginio-Wijnaldum-c14629 added his name to the score-sheet.
Ron Starmans pulled one back in the 84th minute, but the Boeren managed to restore their two goals lead, when Gianluca Maria found the back of the net at the stroke of full time whistle to seal the 3-1 win.
“We opened the scoring in the first period, but as we failed to double our lead, we realised EHC could snatch an equaliser. I thought we had finally wrapped up the game with a second goal but EHC reduced the deficit in the closing stages. The match could
even have gone into extra time when they rattled the bar. We made it 3-1 from the counter-attack, and then it was obviously a mission accomplished”, Advocaat was quoted as saying to the media in the post-match press conference.
The veteran Dutch tactician went on to admit that the fringe players failed to perform at their best, as they were too stressed to stage a convincing show.
“They struggled to impress, maybe because they were so keen to put in a convincing display. But we’ve reached the next round and, frankly, that's all that matters”, Advocaat concluded.
Although, the 65-year-old was not too impressed by several of his side’s youngsters, he should be pleased with Depay, who was replaced by Wijnaldum in the 69th minute, and Maria’s performance on the pitch.
