Dictionary of Special Ed disorders?

I'm looking for a book that lists various disorders and syndromes concerning special ed. I'm hoping to find one that details what the disorders are, what causes them, things to do, etc... If it also came in an easy to navigate format or dictionary format, that would be great! :D

  1. www.ldonline.com

  2. DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, edition four

This manual has every disorder both adult and childhood disorders and syndromes, and can be broken down into

    categories such as

    Childhood disorders

    Impulsive disorders

    Mood disorders

    Anxiety disorders and so forth

  3. There are so many disorders that allow children to qualify for special education services that a dictionary is not your best bet.  You will want a textbook or Professional Manual that has specific details about each disorder.  Try Sage Publishing.

  4. DSM-IV is what you would be looking for.

  5. I have something like this from Scholastic but I do not know the name...

  6. I have "DSM-IV Diagnosis in the schools" by Alvin House.  This sounds like its what you are looking for.  This book goes over childhood diagnoses related to sp. ed.  It is written in a dx friendly style (you will not have to look up every other technical term).  It does go over accommodations/interventions.  It is easy to navigate.  It does not go over the causes (etiology).  You would need a book on pathophysiology of neurology for that.  These books (I also have) are very difficult to understand even after taking related courses in college (neuroscience, drugs and the brain, neuropsychology, cognition).  Your best bet may be to look for journal articles/studies on line.

I have the DSM-IV-TR and the desk reference as well these books do go over the symptoms in detail of all disorders not just related to sp. ed. it is grouped by category like mood disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders etc. It is somewhat technical

I also have a tabers medical dictionary.  it does not give a lot of detail but is a really handy reference tool.
