  1. Its fiction.

  2. George Orwell was writing a commentary on the totalitarian type of government.  He used the framework of a novel in order to accomplish this and get his point across.

While life under a totalitarian regime, such as those of Hitler and Stalin, is pretty grim and full of fear, I think Orwell probably, like many authors, exaggerated a bit in order to make his point.

So, I guess the short answer would be no, but unless we're very careful and attentive to preserving our freedom, a similar situation could indeed occur.

  3. Not a fait accompli...still happening.

  4. Yes 1984 really did happen at different times even into the present day. The machinery of the systems described in the 'fictional' account may have been and be different to those described but the essence of the book was and is all too real.

Do not lightly dismiss this book as fiction, think of it rather as a warning to be ignored at our peril.

  5. The year was between 1983 and 1985 but the book is fiction, no basis in fact.  Some governments have gotten close tho.  Really

  6. George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1944. It is not a history. It was a prediction, one that thankfully did not happen.
