  1. they always had thier land.

  2. Yes

But not as much as they once had!

  3. Yeah...

I heard that on the History.

    Uhhh...

The only problem was that it was not Austalia that gave out land but it was of Borneo. It was called something like "Borneo Colonization Project," and it was supposed to be paid for around 99 years.

    Strange but it was true.

  4. Culturally, indigenous Australians belong to the land. This is quite the opposite relationship to the western concept of "owning the land". In another way - the land owns them (or me - as I consider myself indigenous Australian from Anglo heritage.)

Certainly there are vast tracts of inland Australian territory which are traditionally managed (or if you prefer Aboriginal owned).

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) existed as indigenous representation within the Australian Government, but I'm not sure if it is still in the same portfolio?

  5. No, There land was there before any living person was there.

    Share and share alike.

  6. the indigenous people you are referring to are aboriginals, and australia did give some land back. the mabo case back in 1992 is one occurrence of this. another example is the wik case in 1996.

  7. They did successfully reclaim some land but they had to prove they had ancestral ties to to.

Carol Martin is an Aboriginal woman elected to Australian Parliament their sole representative.

  8. No, they had their land under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, also Native Title.  In certain areas of Aboriginal communities throughout Australia you may require  permits to enter onto their land.

Aden Ridgeway with the Australian Democrats and Warren Mundine (WA Labor Party) there are others but the First Indigenous in Parliament was Neville Bonner.

  9. Yes to both, and in many places people have to

get a special permit.....to holiday in certain areas

belonging to indigenous people......i think this racist

    against other Australians !

Ozzie's should be able to pass without all this as we

are all Australians.......but many decisions like this are made

by governments without the peoples votes as we do not

have  a  Republic or President , and it makes a difference in

the say of the people.  That i s my opinion.

  10. to the person a couple of people up some of these 'holiday' places you speak of are sacred ground how would you like me to pitch a tent on your grandmothers grave for the weekend have s*x in the tent with my boyfriend throw up after i got drunk p**s on the tree next to it and then leave my rubbish all over the place???????

  11. There is no representative of all aboriginal people as they all have separate tribes and fight amongst themselves.

Land was given back and has been left as wasteland because they have no idea how to maintain it.

  12. Yeah, it's called Native Title.

"Only in 1992 was the assumption that Australia was terra nullius rejected by the High Court in the Mabo decision."

Yes, there are Indigenous representatives in some state parliaments.

Edit: Michaella, If you inherited some land from your ancestors you probably wouldn't want every Tom, d**k and Harry allowed to come and go whenever they pleased. A permit system is a way to regulate and prevent mistreatment of their land.

Becoming a republic won't give the people more of a say. Look at the US. They have less of a say because the President chooses his secretaries (ministers). They aren't even elected like ours.

Adrian F, when you say wasteland you must mean unfarmed pristine wilderness.

  13. This is a reply to Jack_19. What you said made me smile because the person you are referring to i felt their post was a bit racist. I agree with you 100%.
