California was it's own country for about 50 years, until american invaded it for its oil, and slaughtered its peace-loving people.  For Shame.

California before it became a state, belonged to the British, French, Spanish, Russians, and Mexico.

     How long? I do not know.

Russia owned Northern California at one time.  Fort Bragg still has some history remnants from that era.  After the Indians, Spain owned portions of it.  When Mexico got their freedom from Spain, they owned parts of it for about 35 years.  Then the U.S. came in, and we have owned it ever since.  California became a state in 1850.
