  1. Are you referring to the Edwin Ray Guthrie who was the psychologist?  If so, this is his information:

Edwin Ray Guthrie, born 1/9/1866 in Lincoln, Nebraska

    died 4/23/1959 in Seattle, Washington

    Married Helen MacDonald (b. 1890 - d. 1979) in abt. 1925 in Seattle.

One child:  Peter Guthrie, born 1927 in Seattle.

  2. genealogy ALWAYS ALWAYS is based on working from yourself, backwards.  That is, proof of your parents.  Next, proof of who their parents were. By this time, you have verified who each of your 4 grandparents were.  From that.. you "prove" that (sample) John Guthrie was the son of <fill in the blank>.

You included nothing about Edwin, not even a country or a frame of time. If Edwin was an adult, before 1930, you MIGHT find him and family in census records in the US.  That is one record available to the public.. but it will not include any children born after 1930.

With all respect.. your search (from Edwin to the present) is the wrong direction to work.  There should be records concerning your grandparent (birth certificate, death certificate, so forth) that will confirm who his/her father or mother was.

    edit

if you are saying that grandpa may have been an out of wedlock child from Edwin Guthrie, then the odds are that no record will exist to prove one way or the other. As mentioned below, it shows one son... but that will not answer your question, either way.
