  1. No Chance.

If a horse brakes more then one leg, or the bone breaks the skin, there is no chance for survival.

Even if a horse breaks one leg and it does not break the skin, the horse has less then 50% chance of living.

Even a dislocated ankle is life threating if you are a horse.

  2. she fractured her front ankles. she wouldnt even be able to stand. :(

  3. The vet said he had never seen such severe breaks in the legs. Chance of survival was zero. They will save a horse if possible, especially a horse that has made it to the Kentucky Derby. The owners can make a fortune off breeding.

    See this story about Barbaro

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbaro

  4. no could not stand so could not survive

  5. eight belles would not have survived.  horses have to have equal weight on all four legs.  they cannot lay down for more than an hour at a time.  they usually stand and sleep.like barbaro, the reason he got laminitis is because he started putting weight on his other legs which could not handle the excess weight. this was a tragedy with eight belles and peta is making toooooo big a deal out of it.  the horsemen and fans were crushed but putting her to sleep was the best thing.  when a horse breaks a bone and gets any dirt on it the chances of infection are very great and that is what happened with eight belles.

  6. No. You can, but she can't! We aren't the same like PETA  keeps saying.

  7. VERY low chance, if any at all. She was in pain, and there was no chance she would be able to walk. Even if she had survived (which is almost completely unlikely) she probably would have terrible injuries the rest of her life, and perhaps never heal. After being used to running so long, life would have been difficult.

They did the right thing. They put her out of pain, with a simple shot.

    May she rest in peace.

  8. she broke BOTH front ankles

too hard to recuperate and heal if she cannot weight bear at all

  9. Absolutely. But it would not make financial sense. A broken ankle is not fatal, even to a horse, if someone is willing to invest enough medical care and attention. But of course, her racing career would be over, and without that there is not much incentive for her owners to invest in her.

This is not to say that euthanizing her was not the most humane thing to do.

  10. Eight Belles had no chance because she shattered her two front ankles and they couldnt splint her.  If it had been one ankle they couldve put her in a cast though there is the chance of laminitis as in Barbaros case.  You need to realize that horses for being such a large animal have remarkably small feet and ankles, so its harder for them to recover from these types of injuries.  It was sad but her owners made the right decision to euthanize her.  Throughbreds are made to run and its what they love to do.

  11. No, no chance with two broken ankles.  Barbarro couldn't survive one.  And you are correct "you" could live through that, however, you are not a horse.

  12. nope
