Question:

Did FDR have affairs during his marriage?

I was just watching a documentary of Eleanor Roosevelt and when it came to the part concerning FDR's death it said that he had died while a woman was with him, whom he had had an affair with in 1919, and that his daughter, Anna, had arranged other meetings for him and the woman during the years.

Does this mean FDR had affairs throughout his marriage and presidency? If so.. I have to say that sadly does make me lose respect for FDR. I really hope it isn't so. Does anyone know?

Also, I apologize if this doesn't fit under the category I put it in, I just thought that people who searh the political section would know more about than perhaps those who search the relationship section.

  1. Here's what wikipedia says:

Roosevelt had affairs outside his marriage, including one with Eleanor's social secretary Lucy Mercer which began soon after she was hired in early 1914. In September 1918, Eleanor found letters revealing the affair in Roosevelt's luggage, when he returned from World War I.

I've read/heard in other types of historical reports that FDR had affairs outside of his marriage too.

  2. FDR has affairs before he lost the use of his legs.

Now, whether he was still having a sexual affair or an emotional one is open to interpretation

  3. Eleanor did not even reside with Roosevelt.  She had other living quarters and traveled a lot because of his affairs.

  4. who in their right mind would want to spend any more time than absolutely necessary with that god-awful ugly hideous creature Elenore.

Besides, they were cousins.  They shouldn't have been married and s******g in the first place. That's called incest.

Finally, Elenore was a proven L*****n.

None of this should be surprising however, because they were Democrats.
