Russia was heavy handed in it's response, but surely the Georgian Government knew what would happen.. or maybe they thought Russia was too scared of the US to act.

  1. I have thought alot the last few days and I keep getting more and more angry. I do not think I would have handled anything differently, however I am upset.

Russia opposed our war in Iraq, (in fairness they supported Afganistan.) Georgia, Ukraine and Poland and other Russian neighbors were very helpful in the Iraq. Good luck getting any of them to help us next time, after the Russian assault on Georgia. The Ukraine government feels they are next and wonder where was the help for our friend. They might have no choice but to cozy up to their big sister bear.

Backlash? Western Europe has not cared for the Russian government for the past five or so years. They lost nothing there. America wants a G7 club instead of a G8, excluding Russia. Russia can make their own club with Iran and Hugo Chavez. Hard to have an industrialized world without more oil and energy. Guess who has that?

I think we just lost some pretty good friends in Eastern Europe and Asia. Score infinite points for Putin and his successors.

  2. All through the 'Troubles' the international community steered clear of getting involved, apart from people in the USA funding the IRA. Ossetia and Abkhazia have been struggling for independence for years and not much notice has been taken. Russia wants to control the pipe line.

It has very little to do with the people from Ossetia or Abkhazia.

  3. The georgians took a gamble that the Russians would not dare to attack under the gaze of the world.S.Ossetia and Abhazia are both in Georgia and the georgians have waited patiently 15 years for the russians to get out of their country. To become a russian citizen, you first become a resident after 5 years and then after 10 you qualify for citizenship. However in south ossetia they came in several trucks and handed out russian passports to the ossetians in one day. That is illegal in russian law.Georgia is in europe and has a democratic society that supports western political systems. When a neighbour does not respect it's constitution and international rights,it is to be helped by other countries. The USA is right to show support. It's borders have been invaded in 2 regions by russia for 15 years. How would you like that happening in England

  4. yeah, I think Georgia thought that Bush would call Putin's bluff and send some troops in. But just imagine if Georgia was a NATO member! (which is only a year or so away as they've been invited)

Under the NATO rules an attack on one member state is deemed is an attack on all members states and so all of NATO may have sent a force in. World war three anyone?

  5. Of course they did,  They underestimated Russia's response.  Ossetia is RUSSIAN.  The people are RUSSIAN.  end of story

  6. you bet ye

  7. Adding to what doggie 91 said; You kind of get tired of getting your teeth kicked in. Russia has been a royal pain in the rear since 1991 over there. America, and Americans, better figure out that if we don't punish Russia in a real and tangible way, all of those satellites are going to go over to Russia. The Ukraine, Romania, et al have to be very concerned with our tepid response to Russia's continued belligerence.

  8. Probably not, since the US doesn't send troops anywhere that won't profit the US in some way.

However.... Georgia should be able to send troops into both those areas, as legally they are both part of Georgia. Russia, on the other hand, is effectively invading a foreign nation to support those in the areas fighting to be part of Russia.

Georgia is by no means innocent. You do not bombard cities full of civilians without repercussions. But at the same time Russia is not merely defending Russian passport holders as it claims; if it was, why were they bombing targets near the Georgian capital?

They're all at it on some level. But the Russians are behaving like Communism is alive and well and dictating the rules to the surrounding nations is as acceptable as it was thirty years ago.

  9. Provocateurs D,agents from Russia,s military Intelligence directive the G.R.U were responsible for the unrest in Ossetia. Georgia knew they were there but were unable to do anything about it

  10. I believe they did,it was a naive gamble that back fired on them, and in a sense you cant blame Russia for coming down with a sledge hammer. Attacking Russian citizens and peacekeepers in Ossetia would only bring one outcome War in my eyes. They want to be thanking the EU for bailing them out of the sh*t like they did :)
