The conflict was created such that Russia could use the excuse to invade. It would appear that Russia desires to return to the power it once had and to gather in the independent states that were once a part of the USSR. The timing corresponds to our lame duck president and upcoming elections to make any action by the US in response ill advised. Remember, Obama looked into the eyes of Putin and saw his soul...McCain looked into Putin's eyes and saw KGB. Russia provides oil to keep Europe looking the other way and nukes to enforce its will. There are so many conflicts globally that Russia might easily get away with its aggression.

Georgia wanted to take over the south part which supports Russia and wants to be a part of Russia, so the leader of Georgia attacked those poor helpless people, and since they liked Russia, Russia went in to help them and defend them, and now they are teaching the Georgian leader a lesson not to mess with them or their allies.

Actually, it was South Ossetia.  They are trying to pull out of Georgia.  Georgia is saying no, and Russia stepped in.

Nicholas...you really should not get your news from sports commentators.  Georgia attacked Ossetia, which is part of Georgia.  Russia stepped in on Ossetia's behalf, and bombed the h**l out of ALL of Georgia.  Georgia has NOT attacked Russia.

hish...Georgia did not want to take over anything the "south part"...Ossetia...was already under Georgia's rule, and trying to break off and join Russia.  Georgia was trying to maintain their control, not gain new control.

Basically when USSR collapsed a small piece of land called South Ossetia separated from Georgia - de facto after a civil was in Georgia in 1990. They there were tensions ever after with Russia actively supporting Ossetia, including making them Russian citizens, paying them pensions etc. There were talks about Ossetia joining Russia. A couple days ago Georgian president declared a ceasefire and like three hours later bombed Ossetia killing 2000 civilians. Russia retaliated and invaded Georgia. Russians say don't intend to topple Georgian government, they just want to send a message. It's pretty complicated, no one in the west media talks about Georgian government being a US puppet and Georgia attacking Ossetia.
