Yup. They were Homo Sapiens. Just like us. They loved their children, they understood the benefits of math, and they understood the beneits of productivity in a culture.

They were very much human. Humans who had fallen in love with math and were using it to show God they could achieve, they made big buildings so that God could see them, be pleased with them and bless them. It also showed other humans that these people were not to be messed with because of their superior ability. To the angel idea above, reproduction was given to humans as a punishment and angels would not be included in this, so angels can not reproduce or even try, to put it nicely.
