Did I do the right thing.?

Question

I just became the supervisor of a department in my company that has mostly women employees. On day one I had a meetings and told them that regardless what had happened in the past, pay raises, promotions, and assignments will be based solely on merit. I would not socialize with any of the employees and I would not have any relationships with them. I wanted them to know that no one could sleep with the boss and get rewarded for it. I thought everyone would think that was the correct thing to do. Was I wrong. Some people were upset because I had blocked the method that was their only hope for promotions. Others were upset because it un-American to prevent employees from sleeping with the boss to get a promotion. Still others were upset because they could not blame sleeping with the boss as the cause of someone getting a promotion other than themselves. Do you think I did the right thing?

Yes Unfortunatly in this day and age womensay they want equal treatment but what they mean is they want to be treated like women in the workplace but they want to be paid like men

Yes sweetheart you did the right thing. I think that if these people are upset with you then it their problem. You being the boss make the rules and are responsible for treating everyone equally--or based on merit. You were completely justified in your actions, and if the people that you work with can't handle it then they need to be educated.

I think you're right to have a merit-based system in your workplace.  However, I think having such a direct talk with them was unnecessary -- it looks like it has just created more workplace drama.  The right thing to do (in my opinion) is to deal with your employees on a one-on-one basis as the need arises (i.e., when one of them makes advances toward you).
