In one scene in the movie The Godfather II,

a solid gold phones is passed around a large

table for everyone to see. Suppose the volume

of gold in the phone was equal to the volume

of 10-centimeter cube of gold. The density of

gold is 19,300 kg/m3.

Could such a phone be casually passed

around a table from hand to hand? What

is the weight of the phone in pounds?

Density = Mass/Volume

1) convert 10 cm^3 to m^3  = .00001 m^3

2) find the mass for 10 cm^3  Mass= .00001 m^3 * (19300 kg/m^3)  = 0.193 kg

3) convert 0.193 kg to pounds (1 kg = 2.2046 lb)  0.4255 pounds

final answer: yes; 0.4255 lb

  1. Yes, you did it exactly right.  Great job!

    The only thing I doubt is that a solid gold phone has a volume of only 10 cm^3.... I would check on that number, but if it turns out to be wrong, you've got the process perfect.
