Question:

Did I get rid of my cats' fleas?

My 4 cats were scratching a little more than usual. I think they might have had fleas, even though I combed them and didn't actually see any. I put "Revolution" on all of them yesterday. Now, they are all scratching even more, particularly on their heads. Did I somehow make it worse? Is that maybe a reaction to the chemicals in the Revolution? Does anyone know how long it takes to work?

  1. It usually takes about 12 hours for revolution to start working on fleas.  Chances are though if you didn't see any to begin with that may not be what was causing the itching.  They can have a reaction to the revolution however I would think it unlikely that all 3 are having a reaaction.  Sometimes the alcohol in the topical flea products can cause them to feel a bit irritated.  If it continues I would probably bathe them all with a nice moisturizing or hypoallergenic shampoo and see if that calms down the itching.

  2. Bathe all of them ( one at a time ) in the bath tub with warn water. Don't wet their head. Only their bodies. Don't make the water too hot and certainly don't use any special shampoo. Just warm water. If there's anything the fleas will die/sink. Make sure to dry your cats.!! This will wash off all the poison used to kill the fleas (yuck) and it will wash of the fleas and kill them in a more "natural" way. Don't use any more poison.

  3. Whatever you do- don't use any more chemicals on them- also you won't get rid of the fleas if you have carpeting-vacuuming daily is a good thing and the most effective treatment without bring any more harm to your cats-  the medications that you get threw the vet for the treatment of parasites are not intended to kill them per say-  what these medications are designed to do is control the flea populations threw the use of your pet- flea bites kitty- kitty has medication on him and sterilizes the flea so it cannot reproduce- also its important to understand that just because the medication is on the outside of your cat -that doesn't mean it's always safe to use- cats l**k and clean themselves and ingest whatever is on their fur- it also penetrates though the skin into your cats blood stream- be sure to check products out thoroughly- just because vet recommends it, doesn't always mean it's safe-  shortly after frontline came out they had a massive recall- its on-line under recalls - its simple to look up-  there is a natural means of treating external and internal fleas- check that

    out too- good luck
