Did I handle this right?

Question

I got one of those telemarketing calls about a lower interest rate. But I spoke to a human this time instead of a computer, so when he asked if he could talk to Mrs. Newman, I said "Is this a telemarketer?" He said yes, so I said "Oh, ok. See ya then" and hung up. Was that not fair? Can you think of a better one, or was that just rude of me. Also was it funny?

Well, I hate telemarketers. Even if I was one, I would expect that kind of response. I can't stand it! I used to get 3 - 5 calls a day from them! It drove me so crazy I eventually got to the point where I would mess with them on purpose. I'm not sure if you should or not, but.. I did it, if it makes you feel any better.

I used to pick it up and it would pause for 3 seconds when it was a telemarketer, so I knew if they didn't answer right away it was one of them. So I would say things like.. "This is the Bat Cave" or "Batwoman" or "GET OFF THE PHONE!!!" while holding the phone away or pretend to use different voices and such.. sometimes I would just pick it up and leave it there with the people saying Hello? over and over again until they hung up. Or I would say "Hold on just one moment" and then put the phone down and they would wait forever until they finally hung up.

Kinda feel bad, but not really. Not my fault there are companies out there that think it's okay to call my home phone. And they charge you to put you on the no-call list! So I just messed with them. *shrug*

People respond to telemarketers like that more than you might think. I know it's easy to get frustrated, but my philosophy on life is to just be nice. Next time it's a telemarketer just say, "Oh, no thank you, we're not interested", but not in a rude way. They will just say "Okay, thanks," and hang up. Then they're not left on the other line, feeling like c**p because people talk to them like they're scum everyday, and they're just trying to make a living at their job.

it seems you did fine. I do not know anyone that likes to get telemarketing phone calls. some say worse things to them than what you did, so do not worry about it. they are used to it or they would get a better job.
