"And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."

  1. In Jewish law, with a lot laws having the punishment of death, many people think the Israelites went around executing each other for every little thing.  However, think of today's laws.  Just because a law warrants a maximum penalty does not mean that person gets the maximum penalty. Our laws say that a first-degree murder warrants execution, but very few murderers are executed, especially today. That was how the law were then.  While there were maximum penalties of death for many laws, executions for breaking these laws were few and far between. The death penalty for breaking them was to show how serious that law was, not to give them an excuse to execute people left and right.

  2. No, He did not condone murder, and no He did not think of Moses as God.  You are reading it wrong.  He was telling the Pharisee's that they were clinging to human laws rather than the divine law that God gave to Moses.

  3. Jesus did not condone murder, He was making sport of the religious folks around Him at the time who were dedicated followers of The Law of Moses ( old Covenant ) which said to put to death anyone who disrespected their parents, and yet were doing the very same, even worse disrespectful things at that time. Thanks for asking.

  4. I don't get that verse, what gift is Jesus talking about?

  5. Capital punishment and murder are two different things.
