I have heard that she signed a paper right before her execution that denied her hearing voices from God, but I don't know if she was tricked into signing it (she was illiterate).

  1. At 13 she began hearing voices from God. They were telling her to disguise herself as a man and join the French army to fight against England. At first she was very afraid, but she did what she was told to do because she was loyal to God and she knew it was him speaking.

In 1429 the voices told her to go see the future ruler of France, Charles VII. She convinced him that it was her divine mission to help save France. He made her talk to his priests and they decided that she was telling the truth.

Joan of Arc was captured and sold to the English during a battle near Paris in 1430. They put Joan on trial because the English thought she was hearing voices from the devil and they thought she was a witch. They ordered her to deny the voices she heard. Of course, she had to give in. They also thought that she was wrong to dress like a man. She was burned at the stake in 1431.

She never denied it, right up to her death. At her execution she bagan crying and praying to God, and asked for a crucifix to be placed in her dress. She always believed that God was talking to her.

  2. She did then took it back because she had been coerced into that confession.

  3. She at first refused to say she did not hear God.  Finally, to escape death, she did say she did not hear his voice....then she was apparently treated badly (raped) by her guards, and then revoked her statement, and was burned at the stake as a heretic.

  4. No. She insisted to the end that she had "heard" voices. Maybe there were a product of her imagination and she was crazy. But nobody can't deny she died brave.

  5. On May 24, 1431, Joan of Arc was taken to the cemetery at St. Ouen and threatened with being burned unless she abjured.  In order to save her life she agreed to sign a paper stating she had abjured however under the extreme stress she was under she probably understood little about what she was doing.  The document that she supposedly signed contained a confession that her revelations were not to be believed but there is some doubt whether this document is the one Joan actually signed.  You can learn more about all of this at:  http://www.maidofheaven.com/joanofarc_lo...

  6. She was tricked. Her last words were, "What was that god? You say these people are douchebags? Yeah, I know, that's what I was just thinking and then..." and then she died.

  7. No, Joan of Arc did not deny hearing voices from God, that was God speaking through her mouth. Right before she was executed God told Joan she was sorry she had somehow  lost her ability to put out fires, that Joan could sign her name by writing 'X', and that the two of them would have to begin their literacy classes a little later than promised.
